MAS Players Attend SS MLK Tourney in Jacksonville
The Annual Martin L King, Jr. Tournament of the Southern Section  was held at the beautiful Crowne Plaza Hotel-Waterfront-Jacksonville, Florida from January 17th  through January 21st . The schedule of games was as per usual. Friday night after play, we were treated to a  vey nice "bag snack"--that was the extent of their hospitality. Their MLK Breakfast/Awards Program was costly--$25.00. Did anyone tell the Southern Section that MLK lived in the poorer part of Atlanta? That he led a "poor peoples' march"?

For those of you who remained in the North, there were no signs of "summer" in Florida.  It was COLD. We definitely were not escaping the winter weather.

The surprising news is that Reggie and Jewel were not there! I thought they went EVERYWHERE! Hope they're well. Glad to see Cal Morris back on the tournament trail. Missed Berrye Thompson, Clarice & Jerrie.

Transportation to  Jacksonville was difficult for several players. Flights were cancelled and players were put on  other airlines. Hedy & Mary had to spend the night in  Nashville. I was switched from American to Delta. Lee Penny got stuck in Tampa, Florida.

The MAS fared well at the tables.  Winston Edwards was on the winning Knockout team; Alice Brown and Pat Foster won the  2-session open pair game;  Mary Young & Hank were second; Moragne/Pennington were 5th and  Echard/Hunter were 9th. The Swiss was won by Art Wills' team. The Christler Team ( Worth, Gloria, Alice, Pat, Moragne, Lee) were 3rd.  Hedy & team were eliminated  from the KO in the quarterfinals. Lee Rucker's team did well in all team events. We welcomed Arnie Gerren who was Lee R's partner for the weekend. Doretha and Leon were in attendance having a good time.

Andy  Echols was the chief director with Mary Duncan and Vernice Whitfield assisting. (Vernice and  other AKA sorors wore  pink and green the entire weekend, in honor of the 100th Anniversary of their sorority. I just might go on up to DC during their great centennial celebration. The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is an offshoot of the AKA Sorority, so we call them our "step sisters".) They will paint the entire town pink & green.  We congratulate them.

Our sympathy goes out to Arnold Jones, Jr, on the loss of his wife Joan. ( Janiuary 22nd).
