THE WAY IT WAS .......................... IN ARIZONA!!
Greetings & Best Wishes From the Mid-Atlantic Section. Thank you ABA for a GREAT summer national tournament. The facilities and service personnel of “Talking Stick” combined with efforts from our ABA Convention Manager, ABA Administrative Staff, Directors, FLASH and Journal Editor, caddies and outstanding northwest and west coast participation produced a desert tournament that met 90% of ABA'ers expectations; winning matchpoints -- the other 10% -- in the desert, had to be unfortunately a disappointment for the majority. However, Congratulations to ALL WINNERS—Louis Garner (Washington Bridge Unit, MAS recipient of the ABA Merit Award), Jerri Thomas (Belsaw & Mixed Pairs), Reginald Chapman (Victor Daly Knockout, Men’s Pairs AND William Friend Award), Clara Berryhill, Joan Anderson, Gwendolyn Harllee (Morning Knockout), Hedy Echard (Women’s Pairs), Leon Ragland, Aldis Raymond, Lillye Holley (Flight S, 2nd Chance Knockout), Carrie & Paul Grady, Barbara Childs (Flight T, 2nd Chance Knockout), Sylvia White (Flight C-Victor Daly Knockout), and Open Pair winners Alice Brown, Bessie Haley, Leola Rucker, Mary Young, and Winston Edwards to name a few. Give MAS winners a HUG and let them know how we are of their success. Check the ABA website for complete (FLASH) coverage of ABA 2011 Summer National Tournament.
There are two new monthly games in Washington DC (The HUT) that players, especially new, are excited about: (1) A PRO - AM – HAM Game where an experienced player (PRO) plays with an inexperienced player (AM). An AM has been revised to under 600 master points and a PRO is a player over 2000mp. All PRO's must play with an AM. An AM may play with anyone they wish. Any player who is between an AM and a PRO are HAMS ( 600 to 1999) and they may also play as long as there partner is not a PRO. WBU August 2011 overall AM winners were (First) Frankie Willis, (Second) Virginia Brockington and first and second section wins for Elve C. King, Bennie Martin, and Evonne Jones and (2) WBU UNDER 100 MASTERPOINTS Game -- No player under 100 is allowed to play. August 2011
Winners were (First) Bennie J. Martin & Virginia O Brockington, (Second) Evonne P. Jones and Alice E. Harriston. Congratulations new players.

Subject: ABA and Bridge Base
Hello board members,
As we discussed in Arizona, I've been in touch with Bridge Base to inquire about the ABA hosting games on line. They are very interested and excited about us joining BBO (Bridge Base Online). Here's a brief outline of how this could work:
- We first need to identify ABA Directors that will direct our games. BBO will train them and furnish at no charge any programming needs the ABA would require. Directing online is the same as in person except no calls are needed for leads/play out of turn, revoking or insufficient bids as the computer doesn't allow this. BBO says most calls are for failing to alert because the bidder alerts; not the partner. The TD also does not set up nor take down or clean up afterwards.
Do you have any directors in your area that might be interested in directoring on line? BBO and I have suggested $10 per hour for club or sanctioned games. ACBL pays $13.50.
- Entry fees are handled by the software, collected by BBO and be sent to the ABA once a month. They are willing to go for a 70/30 split for a year or longer to get our program running. 70 to ABA.
-
- Point awards are also accumulated monthly by BBO and sent electronically to Atlanta. They will set up the algorithm for ABA points for their system.
When we start sanctioned club games awarding city points, we suggest a fee of $2.00 a person.
BBO suggests we start with free games for a few weeks or months to get players and directors familiar with the system and then introduce sanctioned games awarding points.
If the board approves the concept, I'd like to publish something in the coming bulletin announcing the introduction of the ABA to Bridge Base Online. This appears to be a win/win. How about it?
I also urge you to sign on to Bridgebase.com if you're not a member, click on Play Bridge Now and register. You'll see a link to ACBL. The ABA will have it's own link with anything we want the link to say.
Please e-mail me any questions or concerns. I've cc: the NTA for their comment if they have any.
We can begin as soon as we get our directors trained.

It's Time to RE-CLAIM OUR OWN!!! Below is a printout of our MISSING (Inactive) MAS fellow-bridge players. If they are missing from YOUR CLUB, please give them a call. Offer to play with them. Maybe you need someone in your club to give "bridge tips" now and then.
